Wild West Rides East: Local Bookstores Host Cowboy Posses April 14th and 15th
If you've always wanted to hear the jingling of spurs as you walked down the streets of Abilene, or absorb the legacy of Wyatt Earp in Tombstone, or mingle with some long-legged cowpoke in Cheyenne, you'll have your chance to grab a taste of the Wild West right here in the greater Boston area this week.Pop culture expert Yardena Rand, author of the new book, "Wild Open Spaces: Why We Love Westerns," uses the term "Wild West Rides East" to describe her local bookstore appearances. "This is not your typical book signing," Rand says, "where a meek author chews an autographing pen and sheepishly hides behind stacks of books. Coming to one of my signings is like immersing yourself in the Old West."Indeed, Rand, dressed in full Western regalia, will be coming to area bookstores accompanied by a posse of cowboys from local Cowboy Action Shooting Clubs (there are 22 clubs with over 450 members throughout New England!). The cowboys/gals, with their colorful "wild rags," hats, calico shirts, leather suspenders, worn chaps, jangling spurs, and long skirts are not only a feast for the eyes, but a wealth of information about Old West history, clothing, and gear. The focal point of her appearances, Rand will interview the cowboys to show that the spirit of the Old West is alive and well?even in New England.
"These cowboys grew up on Westerns and have loved the West since they were kids," Rand notes. "Participating in cowboy clubs gives them a chance to relive their childhoods, chat up the Old West with like-minded pards, and escape their 21st century stresses." Rhode Island's Lincoln County Lawman founder Bill English (aka Happy Trails) agrees. "Donning the costume puts you into the timeframe. It's relaxing. You feel like you're back in the 1890s when things were better.""When they don their spurs and chaps," Rand concludes, "they do more than wear a costume.
